Makko Powder is one of the best materials to use for formulating your own incense sticks or cones. It binds and holds your blends together, while helping them burn smoothly and easily.
Sourced ethically and sustainably direct from Japan, Makko powder is the pure ground bark of the Machilus Thunbergii tree, no fillers or additives.
Always check for the latin name as some suppliers do not know the difference between joss powder and makko powder. Makko powder is a lighter shade of brown, when mixed it forms a soft dough that is very easy to use and roll. Joss Powder is also an excellent alternative, it is darker, and when mixed is stickier and very pliable. They are both excellent binders for making incense and loose self combusting incense. They are slightly different so make sure you choose the right one.
Joss powder is a very strong adhesive type ingredient best for using with dry ingredients such as wood powders. Makko is a beautiful all rounder that works best with higher amounts of incense tree resins. Of course you can use them both together if you are using high amounts of powdered herbs etc, such as sage where it helps the ingredients stick together better.
